Teaching Artists are the lifeblood of our program, our most valuable asset. To ensure unity of purpose and intention, all prospective teachers are trained extensively in the Dulaine Method incorporating the program’s 20 lesson syllabus, classroom management skills, and curriculum integration. SEEKING ACTORS, DANCERS, EDUCATORS who move well and are interested in becoming Certified Teaching Artists for the internationally acclaimed social development, arts-in-education residency program Dancing Classrooms.

Created by Pierre Dulaine, Dancing Classrooms is the subject of two documentaries, MAD HOT BALLROOM and DANCING IN JAFFA, as well as the inspiration for the feature film TAKE THE LEAD with Antonio Banderas.

Applicant Requirements

Please note the requirements for DCLI’s Teaching Artist Training Program:

1) Be available to attend our 40-hour training course.

2) Serve as a Teaching Assistant for a minimum of one 20 -lesson residency course.

3) Teaching experience and/or experience working with youth strongly preferred; if no teaching experience, candidate must have a background in dance or musical theater.

4) Ability to communicate clearly and loudly and command a classroom (in English; additional languages are a plus).

5) Must be available between the hours of 7:00am and 3:30pm Monday through Friday for teaching in public and private schools and community organizations September through June. After-school and summer work are a possibility but not always available.

6) Fingerprinting clearance with the NYS Dept. of Education required.

7) Must have a car, car insurance, and be willing to drive between Nassau and Suffolk County.

8) Must live in Eastern Queens, Nassau or Western Suffolk County. Nassau is preferred as the majority of our work is in Nassau.

Qualities and skills vital for every Dancing Classrooms Teaching Artist:

Ability to command a room and engage children;
Good rhythm and a love of movement;
Exemplary professional conduct and administrative skills;
Excellent interpersonal communication skills;
Ability to work in a team setting and in a classroom setting;
Understanding of children’s classroom dynamics and how to manage behavior;
Generous spirit, flexibility, and a good sense of humor;
Attitude of lifelong learning and the ability to accept feedback.
